During the “Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60” special that aired last night on ABC, Disney revealed new concept art and a few more details about the upcoming Star Wars Lands coming to Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Announced last August during Disney’s D23 EXPO 2015, the 14-acre expansion plans will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet.
The land will have two signature attractions.
Guests will be able to step aboard the Millennium Falcon and actually pilot the fastest ship in the galaxy, steering the vessel through space, firing the laser cannons, in complete control of the experience. Guests will also find themselves in the middle of a tense battle between First Order stormtroopers and Resistance fighters in the 2nd attraction.
No details were given as to what kind of ride systems will be used to bring both attractions to life.
Also shown during the special was a few “market” areas where guests can taste Star Wars-inspired food, as well as visit the local Cantina to order a drink.
The partnership between Disney and Lucasfilm dates back to 1987, when the successful Star Tours attraction, inspired by George Lucas’s legendary Star Wars film series, opened at Disneyland. The attraction was then redesigned, emerging as “Star Tours – The Adventures Continue” in 2011 and featuring more than 50 different story outcomes and the possibility to visit five different planets.
No timetable for the expansion’s completion has been given.
